about

Puzzling and experimental Stefano Carbonelli’s new album out on Auand Records
Labyrinthian structures, research, and energy in “Ravens Like Desks”
Italian guitar player’s new work featuring Daniele Tittarelli (alto sax), Matteo Bortone (double bass) and Riccardo Gambatesa (drums)
Sudden changes, unpredictable harmonies and structures revealing underground worlds. Stefano Carbonelli’s music is an enigma, an intellectual challenge at its most extreme, on an electric guitar’s edge.
‘Ravens Like Desks’ marks the Italian musician’s debut under Auand Records with a tribute to Lewis Carroll’s and Alice’s nonsense: the title track refers to the Mad Hatter’s unanswerable riddle (“Why is a raven like a writing desk?”), outlining the true essence of this work.
Balancing logic and absurd, rules to be broken and music culvert to escape through, Carbonelli pushes irregular frameworks to tension-filled harmonies. A harmonic maze he’s designed over the last few years: «Later – the composer says – I’ve found several similar elements in classical and contemporary music (Stravinskij, Ravel,
Ligeti), in Bulgarian rhythms, and in some recent jazz musicians’ compositions. It proved those ideas could generate coherent aesthetic and language.»
Following him in this exploration of the absurd, three musicians who are not afraid of going further. Daniele Tittarelli carries his original sound, as well as his versatility – making his alto sax a perfect fit for the quartet, regardless of him being a new entry.
Matteo Bortone, another Auand Family member and extremely solid bass player, enhances Carbonelli’s arrangements while Riccardo Gambatesa shares a longtime synergy with the leader: they shaped the most
irregular tunes in the album together.
«I aimed at a pianoless band to leave harmonic room to the guitar – Carbonelly adds – The repertoire we built entailed an intense study, both on a structural point of view, in order to give a harmonic sense without other accompanying instruments, and on a musical point of view, to process unconventional chords and irregular times. I’ve added an alto sax in half of the tracks to highlight melodies while not
hiding the harmonic structures.»
Although the form of each tune is a well-planned puzzle, each performance is a wide open window on diverse improvisational and stylistic sparks. Tittarelli’s sax gets mellow in ‘The Entropic Quiet,’ and a sweet guitar can be heard on ‘Febbre a 17.’ Carbonelli has a friendly conversation with double bass in ‘The Selfish Giant,’ while ‘Frenetico’ makes the most of sounds and silences in Gambatesa’s drumming and develops a steady tension. All ten tracks – fast tunes and 11/8, rock parenthesis and latin moods – reveal quite a lot of surprises.
